Guadalajara is a city that offers all
kind of attractions and shows; dazzling civil and religious
architecture; art and history museums and galleries;
colourful parks, plazas and sidewalks; public markets
and stores full of arts and crafts, enough and varied
hotel and restaurant services, where typical Mexican
dishes as well as international food can be savoured.
All this easy to access through the marvellous transit
communication net of Guadalajara, which includes first-class
highways, railways and national airlines. Perhaps due
all these qualities, the city has been centre of many
international events.
THE WEATHER
The climate in Guadalajara is said to
be the nicest, and the most consistent in the world.
In the summer the temperature is usually about 28°C
during the day and cools off to 23°C at night. Winter
temperatures are approximately 23°C during the day and
14°C at night. The humidity is quite low in Guadalajara,
with it increasing somewhat during the rainy season
(June-August). During rainy season it often rains at
night, but is usually sunny and pleasant during the
day. The weather is never very cold, so heavy clothing
is unnecessary.
THE CULTURE
There are several customs in Mexico that
may be new to you. For example, it is customary to shake
hands when being introduced, and women often kiss each
other's cheeks when meeting and leaving. Mexicans do
not remove their shoes while inside their homes. Smoking
is acceptable, but becoming more unpopular. If you smoke,
please mention it on your application for admission,
so that we can match you with hosts who will not mind.
MONEY
In Mexico the currency is Peso. The exchange
rate changes daily, but is approximately: $13.75 pesos
to EUR 1 or $11.35 pesos to US$1.
THE LAW
Unlike some places in the world, the
legal system in Mexico has some flaws. Policemen are
not always helpful, and it is always advisable to say
strictly within the law.
TRANSPORT
Guadalajara has many different city bus
companies, ranging from not well-maintained buses, to
very comfortable, well-maintained buses with air conditioning
and televisions for about six pesos per trip. Taxis
are also very inexpensive, costing from 20 - 60 pesos
to go anywhere within the city. Long-distance buses
also vary in quality. When purchasing a ticket, remember
to ask for first-class.
FOOD
For many families, breakfast is quick
and casual. Coffee, cereal, quesadillas or tamales,
are often found on Mexican breakfast tables. Lunch is
traditionally the big meal of the day. Supper is usually
a light, late meal in Mexico. Sushi is also becoming
a very popular food with the Mexicans living in Guadalajara.
You should tell your host if you are hungry. If you
do not accept something to eat or drink the first time
it is offered, your host will probably assume you do
not want anything. Mexican food can be quite spicy,
or sometimes it is mild, with optional hot sauces available.
Your hosts want you to enjoy your meals, but they will
not know your preferences unless you tell them. Also,
be sure to indicate foods you dislike or are allergic
to.
